Director of Innovation and Instruction

  • K. Kevin Aten, a Colorado native, takes great pride in the fact his roots run deep in the Centennial State.  His family homesteaded in McElmo Canyon (south of Cortez). He grew up on a small farm, raising sheep, cattle and hogs, in the mountains of Durango.  He is always looking to bring his innovative vision of hope and grit, inspired by values learned on the farm, to provide collaborative work with the staff, principals, assistant principals, students, and families in Estes Park.  

    Dr. Aten is excited to work with the Estes Park community to ensure our students continue to compete in a global economy.  Furthermore, Dr. Aten is committed to a goal of 100 percent graduation rate, by providing each student with whole-child focused educational opportunities, based on foundations of academic rigor and 21st Century post-secondary workforce readiness skills. 

    Dr. Aten has been married to his bride, Betty, for over 29 years.  Betty, another Colorado native, is an English teacher at Loveland High School, and she has worked in secondary schools for 28 years.  They have two sons, William, age 25, a Colorado State University graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies-Eastern Europe, with a minor in Russian Language.  William works and lives in Washington, D.C.  Alexander, age 23, is a student at Front Range Community College, in Fort Collins.  

    Aten began his teaching career in 1990 as an award-winning newspaper, yearbook, photography, and English teacher at Durango High School.   He was a graduate of Durango High School and taught with many educators who were his teachers in high school. 

    From 1996-2002, he was an assistant principal at Rifle High School. He worked to provide an inclusive culture, reduce instructional disruptions, and increase overall student attendance. 

    After leaving Rifle, Dr. Aten, was principal for 10 years of Mountain View High School in Loveland, Colorado from 2002-2012.  Mountain View High School was recognized as one of the top 10 high schools in the nation for Positive Behavior Instructional Support.  During his time at Mountain View, Aten was recognized for overall achievement gains and expansion of the Advanced Placement offerings. 

    In 2012, Aten joined one of the largest districts in Colorado, Greeley-Evans School District 6, as the Chief Human Resources Officer for a district with over 2,700 employees and 22,000 students.  

    Dr. Aten was one of less than 125 principals, nationally, to complete for National Board Certification for Education Leaders program. 

    He earned his Doctor of Education in Education Studies, Change, and Reform from the University of Northern Colorado. His dissertation and research focused on secondary school climate and culture and is titled: Schoolwide Positive Behavior Supports in a Comprehensive High School: Teachers’ Core Beliefs.  From that work, he has traveled all over Western America as an educational consultant helping districts and K-12 schools reach consensus to establish safe and welcoming environments for staff, students, and families. 

    In his free time, he has been a youth sports official for over 32 years.  He is an accomplished soccer referees in Colorado, working high school contests, U.S. Soccer Federation youth matches and even a few professional soccer games.  He has been fortunate to be selected to work numerous state high school playoff games in 3 sports: basketball, football and soccer.
